Jumping up and down
toddlers two and fifty-two
laughing out too loud.

The beer bottle lies
drained and dry, stepfather's hand
firm around its neck.

My daughter swings high
and etches a perfect smile
on an imperfect sky.
Aguas azules
wash away my blues, leave me
cleansed and renewed.

In uniform disguised and wearing vacant eyes
left family and humanity
a million miles away.

you drive fifty miles
to an empty smile you swear
will surely fill you.
